Blood Root is native to the eastern parts of North America; it gets its name from the blood like colored liquid within its rhizomes. In times past Native American Indians would use the rhizome as a dye and for many medicinal purposes as healing wounds, poison ivy, skin infections, respiratory diseases, as an emetic, gastrointestinal tract support, sore throat, congestion, hemorrhoids and irregular menstruation. Its expectorant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory actions can help clear mucus in the airways that will help with whooping cough and other respiratory problems like asthma, bronchitis, flu, colds, sinus infections, etc. Its anti-fungal properties make it useful for eczema, ringworm, venereal warts, and many other skin infections. Blood root has also been used for dissolving tumors and abnormal growths internally and applied topically for external lumps; the chemical berberine found in blood root was said to destroy cancer cells. Blood root is a very potent herb and should be taken short term at low dosages.
